40 years young at heart

Named after the party capital of the world, the SEAT Ibiza has been the life and soul of euphoric experiences since its debut in 1984. A vehicle of pure escapism, the model has inspired its drivers to challenge the norm, discover new horizons, and chase the halcyon days of youthful adventure for 40 years and counting. With plenty of zest left in this supermini yet, the journey is only just beginning…

A small hatch, with a big future.

Combining Italian design, German engineering and a Spanish soul, the first-generation SEAT Ibiza was visualised by legendary Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. Originally pencilled to become the VW MkII, his efforts were rejected before SEAT pounced on the opportunity to launch a unique small car concept. Boasting a quirky yet handsome exterior, a futuristic cabin, and a Porsche-developed powertrain, the MkI screamed of exciting possibilities.

An instant hit, the first-generation sold 1,342,001 units around Europe between 1984 and 1993. Paving the way for future generations to add to the tally, resulting in over 6 million sales to date. Making it the most popular SEAT model ever.

Five generations of game-changing fun

Stamping its own twist of fun-loving flair on the small car segment, the MKII became the first Ibiza to be fully developed and produced under VW ownership in 1993. The MkI’s creator Giugiaro was tasked with refreshing the car’s contours for an increasingly sophisticated audience. Fully re-shaped, the MkII offered a softer flyline, while the possibility of configuring the car with a dynamic 2.0-litre engine made it the most desired hot-hatch on the market. Innovating further, it was the first in class to feature a TDI diesel engine.

Nimble and aggressively-styled, the MkIII became the sportiest Ibiza in 2002. A large front grille, alloy wheels, twin airbags, air-conditioning and electric windows added to its appeal. Winning What Car? Magazine’s Car of the Year award in 2003, as well as their Best Supermini award three years running proved its worth.

Released in 2008 with a re-imagined design code, the MkIV levelled-up it looks with the help of ex-Lamborghini designer Luc Donckerwolke. Fresh and flowing, the fourth-generation era saw a three-door and an estate Ibiza ST released. The Ecomotive model offered drivers an adventure-boosting 80 MPG.

Refining the exuberant beginnings of all Ibiza generations, the 2017 MkV streamlined the range. Refocusing on the model’s five-door, petrol-powered origins. The most refined model yet in terms of form and function, the car retains all of its early exuberance, while increasing everyday practicality. With sales growing by 24% in 2023 alone, the Ibiza shows no signs of slowing down as it drives into its fifth decade on the road.
